Bob the Builder is a British children's animated television show created by Keith Chapman. In the original series, Bob appears in a stop motion animated programme as a building contractor, specialising in masonry, along with his colleague Wendy, various neighbours and friends, and their gang of anthropomorphised work-vehicles and equipment. The show is broadcast in many countries, but originates from the United Kingdom where Bob is voiced by English actor Neil Morrissey. The show was later created using CGI animation starting with the spin-off series Ready, Steady, Build!.

In each episode, Bob and his group help with renovations, construction, and repairs and with other projects as needed. The show emphasises conflict resolution, co-operation, socialisation and various learning skills. Bob's catchphrase is "Can we fix it?", to which the other characters respond with "Yes we can!" This phrase is also the title of the show's theme song, which was a million-selling number one hit in the UK.

In October 2014, Bob the Builder was revamped by Mattel for a new series to be aired on Channel 5's Milkshake! in 2015. Amongst the changes were a complete overhaul of the cast, with Harry Potter actor Lee Ingleby replacing Neil Morrissey as the voice of Bob, and Joanne Froggatt and Blake Harrison were also confirmed as the voices of Wendy and Scoop respectively. The setting and appearance of the characters also changed, with Bob and his team moving to the bustling metropolis of Spring City. An American localisation of the new series debuted on PBS Kids in November 2015. The changes have been criticized by fans of the original version.
Impact
Bob the Builder was nominated in the BAFTA "Pre-school animation" category from 1999 to 2009, and won the "Children's Animation" category in 2003 for the special episode "A Christmas to Remember". Of the show's success, Sarah Ball said:

Bob the Builder has been parodied by Robot Chicken in the episode "More Blood, More Chocolate", and by Comedy Inc. as Bodgy Builder.

Bob was also parodied on Cartoon Network's MAD in the episode "S'UP / Mouse M.D." In the episode when Mickey Mouse portrays Gregory House he goes to perform surgery on Bob who smashed his thumb asking similar to his famous catchphrase "Can we fix it?" Mickey then replies no and orders for it to be amputated. He later appears in another episode when Bob interacts with Manny from Handy Manny after they get into a fender bender and get into an argument with Bob saying "Stop copying my show!" He leaves then someone tells Manny he just got built. In another episode, "Kung Fu Blander / Destroy Bob the Builder Destroy", Mad parodies Bob the Builder and Destroy Build Destroy. In the episode, Andrew W.K. of Destroy Build Destroy, is portrayed as being a jerk towards Bob. Andrew destroys everything Bob builds. In the end, Bob transforms his construction vehicles into Build-Tron (a parody of Voltron). A New Yorker cartoon shows a parent in a toy store asking for toys depicting Alex the Architect, supposedly a white-collar equivalent to Bob the Builder.

Some have complained about technical errors and lack of proper safety practices in the programme, especially the absence of protective eyewear. However, in later episodes, Bob is seen using safety glasses.
Merchandise
Various companies manufacture licensed Bob the Builder merchandise (e.g.: Brio, Lego Duplo, Hasbro, Learning Curve, etc.) since about 1999 to present. Sometimes some fans make fan-made merchandise for the television show, such as racing games that are not related to the show.

Lego Duplo/Explorer
Lego began manufacturing licensed Duplo Bob the Builder sets in 2001. Lego Explorer also made the sets using the same bricks that Duplo used (e.g. Naughty Spud, Wallpaper Wendy, etc.). The sets were aimed at younger children, two and up. Duplo manufactured the sets (e.g. Scoop at Bobland Bay, Muck Can Do It, etc.) until 2009 when Lego's contract expired.

Hasbro
Hasbro created licensed Bob the Builder characters. They included talking characters and others to go with the Bob the Builder line. The Hasbro line was discontinued in 2005 when Learning Curve took the chance to take over.

Learning Curve
Learning Curve among countless others held a license to make the toys, but discontinued them. They first merchandised their Bob the Builder products in 2005 after the Hasbro range was discontinued. Learning Curve also created the Thomas & Friends characters, while the company still makes the sets (e.g. Scoop, Muck, Lofty, Dizzy, andys trailer etc.) and then sold them to stores. They discontinued them in 2010 and it is unknown if they could ever return to making them. The toys are currently available in the United Kingdom by Character Options.

Character World
In 2012, Character World announced that they had signed a license to manufacture official Bob the Builder bedding and bedroom textiles. A duvet cover is said to be available in the UK in late 2012.

Video games
Various companies released Bob the Builder games.
Jolly Roger (Amusement Rides) Ltd. released two kiddie rides based on the series, a Scoop in January 2000, and a Roley in March 2003. In March 2003, Scoop was re-released with a new dashboard and a Stamar soundboard. Then, in 2004, versions of both rides were released with video screens.
List of Bob the Builder episodes
In May 2005, a sort of spin-off series was released titled Bob the Builder: Project Build It. Bob hears of a contest to build a new community in a remote area called Sunflower Valley, outside of Bobsville. He moves from Bobsville (supposedly temporarily) with Wendy and the machines and builds a new Yard there. Bob convinces his father, Robert, to come out of retirement and take over the Bobsville building business. It is unknown whether Bob returned to Bobsville in the stop-motion series or not after this spin-off series was finished.

For the US version of the Project Build It series, different actors were found to do the voices for many of the human characters, including casting Greg Proops as the new voice of Bob, and Rob Rackstraw, who played the original Scoop, to be the voices of Spud the Scarecrow and Mr. Bentley for both the UK and the US. The show also added recycling and being environmentally friendly to its lessons, emphasising the phrase "Reduce, Reuse, Recycle."

This series premiered on September 3, 2005 in the United States.

Ready, Steady, Build!
The third spin-off was titled Bob the Builder: Ready, Steady, Build! It was created by Keith Chapman and Mallory Lewis. The group, now joined by newcomer Scratch are now residing in the town of Fixham Harbour (which is very similar to Bobsville, and is even implied to be Bobsville in several episodes), deal with construction and other building tasks around the area. Unlike previous series, Ready, Steady, Build! is animated in full CGI animation, which allows for larger and more elaborate construction projects that would be too large or expensive for the model sets of the stop-motion series, though it still retains the theme song.
Bob the Builder (2015 TV series)

After the show originally ended in 2012, Mattel bought the Bob the Builder franchise for a revamped series which premiered on September 1, 2015 on Channel 5. The series was given a visual overhaul, for both the characters and the scenery, with Bob and his team moving to the bustling metropolis of Spring City. The CGI animation remained and the construction projects and buildings are significantly larger and more advanced. Mr. Bentley is now seen with a new character, Mayor Madison and a new builder named Leo joined the building team. Several new vehicles were also introduced, including a heavy delivery vehicle named Two-Tonne joining the team.

The entire cast was also replaced: Harry Potter's Lee Ingleby and Downton Abbey's Joanne Froggatt were confirmed to voice Bob and Wendy respectively. The music was also remastered but the rhythm of the main theme remained very much the same, and the lyrics were given only minor alterations due to the introduction of new characters.

The reboot was very poorly received by long time fans of the older series. Criticism focused on the new design of the characters.

Turner Broadcasting System later bought the UK broadcasting rights for the 2015 series to be repeated on Cartoon Network UK's sister pre-school channel Cartoonito UK. The channel began airing the series in January 2016.

The show also airs on Family Jr. in Canada.

Voice actors
Voice actors who have contributed to the original British version include Neil Morrissey, Rob Rackstraw, Kate Harbour, Rupert Degas, Colin McFarlane, Maria Darling, Emma Tate, Richard Briers, June Whitfield and Wayne Forester.

Celebrities who have provided voices for the series (usually for one-off specials) include John Motson, Sue Barker, Kerry Fox, Ulrika Jonsson, Alison Steadman, Stephen Tompkinson, Elton John, Noddy Holder, and Chris Evans (Bobsville's resident rock star Lennie Lazenby).

International broadcasts
Bob the Builder is shown in more than thirty countries, and versions are available in English, French, Spanish, Slovenian, German, Italian, Dutch, Hebrew, Hindi and Croatian, among other languages. It was shown on CBeebies on BBC television in the UK.

The North American version of the show uses the original British footage and script, but dubs the voices in American accents and slang; for example, the word "soccer" is used instead of "football" to avoid confusion with the gridiron forms of the game. The original North American voice of Bob (and Farmer Pickles/Mr. Beasley/Mr. Sabatini) was William Dufris, however, he was replaced with comedian Greg Proops. More recently, Bob's US voice has been provided by Marc Silk, an English voice actor from Birmingham.
When being exported to Japan, it was reported that characters of Bob the Builder would be doctored to have five fingers instead of the original four. This was because of a practice among the Yakuza, the famed Japanese mafia, where members would "cut off their little fingers as a sign they can be trusted and have strength of character, and will stay through." In fact, Bob the Builder aired in Japan without such edits, as did other series including Postman Pat and The Simpsons.

After the original show ended in 2012, Mattel bought the Bob the Builder franchise for a revamped series which premiered on Channel 5 on 1 September 2015. The series was given a visual overhaul for both the characters and the scenery, with Bob and his team moving to the bustling metropolis of Spring City. The CGI animation remained and the construction projects and buildings are significantly larger and more advanced. Mr. Bentley is now seen with a new character, Mayor Madison and a new builder named Leo joined the building team. Several new vehicles were also introduced, including a heavy delivery vehicle named Two-Tonne.

Turner Broadcasting System later bought the UK broadcasting rights for the 2015 series to be repeated on Cartoon Network UK's sister pre-school channel Cartoonito UK. The channel began airing the series in January 2016.After the first season ended Rainmaker Entertainment announced that they have ceased animating the show due to issues the company was having at the time. DHX Media announced that they have started work for the second season and that their Halifax studio have officially replaced Rainmaker Entertainment.

The show also airs on Family Jr. in Canada.

In Australia, Bob the Builder premiered in 2016. It airs on 10 Peach <small>(formerly known as Eleven)</small> every weekday morning.

Criticism
The reboot was very poorly received by long time fans of the older series. Criticism focused on the characters' redesigns and the changes to their personalities.
It is a comedy puppet panel show following a format that parodies University Challenge. There are five contestants in each episode. Each show includes a 'missing word round', a 'picture round', a 'numbers round', a 'sound round,' and sometimes a 'general knowledge round'. The winner receives a silly prize -- Mr. Biscuits won a wooden spoon in episode 28.

Characters
Different contestants appear in different episodes. Mr Biscuits has appeared in every episode alongside Mr Flipstick the quiz master.
*Walter Flipstick - He is the quizmaster of the show and a walrus.
*Mr Biscuits - He is an unknown species (he looks like a rabbit, but he has a red nose, like a clown's) who is an expert in the subject of biscuits. He once invented a biscuit that bakes itself.
*Orange Bernard - He is a banana obsessed orangutan. His greatest achievement is the ability to eat a banana sideways.
*Ken Koala - He is a very shy koala with an Australian accent.
*Miss Honkover - She is an exotic showbiz bird.
*Henrietta Peck - She is an enthusiastic, but not very intelligent hen. She is often joined by one of her eggs hatching into a very deep voiced chick part way through the show. She is the only character who didn't appear in Series 2, but she returned in Series 3.
*Charles Cheese - He is a mouse with a cheese fascination. Also, he is the smallest of all of the contestants.
*B1N - B1N is a robot made from a pedal bin. B1N frequently answers 'sausage' to any question.
*Callista Croak - She is a frog who likes to keep fit.
*Riley Racer - He is a red racing car who likes racing, hence his name and species. He has an older brother named Ricky, a blue racing car, who showed up in one episode.
*Adrian Anteater - He is a clumsy anteater who loves eating ants and talks with a German accent. He often presses his buzzer by accident.
*Stem and Petal - They are hostile twin flowers who find it very hard to get along. One episode showed Stem trying to play the quiz without Petal, until the end.
*Ninjanic - She is a human ninja who likes to keep quiet and talks in a whispered voice.
*DJ Flappy - He is a fruit bat who writes and produces music.
It is broadcast on UK TV channel CBeebies; the series follows a pre-school bunny named Bing as he experiences the world around him. It uses small everyday occurrences to demonstrate how he learns new ways to manage situations with the help of his carer, Flop (voiced by Mark Rylance) and friends. The programme's central phrase is "It's a Bing thing!" which Flop intones at the end of each episode when Bing has successfully conquered a troubling task or enjoyed a new childhood experience.
Bod is a BBC1 children's television programme first shown in 1975, with thirteen episodes, based on four original Bod books by Joanne and Michael Cole. It is a cel animated cartoon series narrated by John Le Mesurier and Maggie Henderson with music by Derek Griffiths and produced by David Yates. The four books were published in 1965 in the United Kingdom and later in the United States and France. They are: Bod's Apple, Bod's Present, Bod's Dream and Bod and the Cherry Tree. The French version of Bod's Apple is called La Pomme de Gus.

Before the animated series was commissioned, the four books had been read on another BBC children's programme: Play School. In 1974, thirteen five-minute episodes were created for transmission on the BBC as part of the Watch with Mother series, and were also sold to Australia's ABC channel. Soon thereafter, it was shown in New Zealand, the Netherlands, Sweden, Finland, Norway, Poland and Israel. In the United States, Bod aired on Nickelodeon as a segment on the Pinwheel program.

The character of Bod is a boy who lives in a town with Aunt Flo, PC Copper, Frank the Postman and Farmer Barleymow. Each of the characters has their own theme music performed by Griffiths which is heard when they appear. Regular features are animal identification and Bod Snap.

There is also another set of characters who appear in each episode called Alberto Frog and his Amazing Animal Band with artwork by Joanne Cole. This section featured short extracts from famous pieces of classical music as part of the story, and always ended with Alberto choosing a different flavour of milkshake as his reward for solving a problem, and was narrated by Maggie Henderson.

Bod has appeared in Channel 4's 100 Greatest Kids' TV shows and 100 Greatest Cartoons.

The Alberto Frog segments were produced separately by the BBC and were originally shown alongside the Bod episodes; only five of these thirteen segments are known to survive, following a decision in the early 1990s to wipe a large amount of videotaped 1970s children's programmes and originally on BBC Two, and produced by Universal Studios. It features several cartoon characters who play a game similar to hide and seek in a variety of settings. The commentary is performed by an adult narrator and a chorus of children. The series was produced by the independent production company Tell-Tale Productions, which was also responsible for Tweenies. From 2007 to 2012, reruns of the show, then it re-airs again in January 2019, were broadcast in the USA on Qubo.

The series ran for a total of 102 episodes and one Christmas special and was nominated for a BAFTA in 2002-03.

At the end of the programme a song is sung, usually about matching characters or objects to their shapes or colours.

The visual style of Boo! is very distinctive, using 3D CGI with rounded shapes and cel-shading. The music and songs are generally in an early-70s funk/R&B idiom.

Characters
*Boo - a pear/eggplant-shaped patchwork creature with orange spiky hair. His feet are red with white spots on them. The main object of the programme is to find Boo in his various hiding places. Half-way through each episode, Boo magically adopts attributes of his surroundings (e.g. becomes "Penguin Boo" in the Antarctic). Boo cannot talk, although he whistles at the beginning of each episode and dances during every song.
*Laughing Duck (voiced by Kate Harbour) - a yellow soft-toy duck, who laughs when "found". She has a red-orange bill that matches her legs and has abilities to fly and swim. In some episodes, she meets some people who happen to be employees. In the hospital, she has been found sad because her laugh is lost, but it is regained when Boo tickles her flipper.
*Sleeping Bear (voiced by Justin Fletcher)) a brown teddy bear who is usually asleep, yawning or stretching when "found". His blankie is red with white-printed hearts on it. The catchphrase associated with him is "Shhh... Tippy-toe, tippy-toe."
*Growling Tiger (also voiced by Justin Fletcher) - a friendly soft-toy tiger with fluffy white ears. Despite his name, he says "Roar!" (not "Growl!") when found. His associated catchphrase is "It's Growling Tiger! Run away! Run away!"

Other characters, both human and animal vary from one episode to another. The people who have speaking roles in this show are the artists, Chatty Hairdresser, Helpful Nurse, Caring Doctor, Helpful Teacher (the ice-skater), Helpful Waitress, Happy Customers (one man and one woman), Busy Chef, the woman in high stilts, the ringmaster, Careful Grownup, Graceful Teacher (the ballet dancer), Gentle Vet and Cheering Dad. The Blue Squawking Parakeet (actually a Cockatoo) with a red crest on it appears in a birdcage (being taken home by a customer) when we are about to enter the veterinarian.
Flower Pot Men is a British children's programme, produced by BBC television, first transmitted in 1952, and repeated regularly for more than twenty years. A reboot of the show called Bill and Ben was produced in 2001.

Original series
Originally, the programme was part of a BBC children's television series titled Watch with Mother, with a different programme each weekday, most of them involving string puppets. The Flower Pot Men was the story of Bill and Ben, two little men made of flower pots who lived at the bottom of an English suburban garden. The characters were devised by Hilda Brabban. She wrote three original stories of the three characters (Bill, Ben and Little Weed) which she sold to the BBC for one guinea each. The stories were originally broadcast on the radio programme Listen with Mother in 1951.

The rights to the stories were later sold to Ben Productions which turned the radio programme into the hugely popular television show. The puppeteers were Audrey Atterbury and Molly Gibson. The voices and other noises were produced by Peter Hawkins, Gladys Whitred and Julia Williams. The narration for all episodes was done by Maria Bird.

The plot changed little in each episode. The programme always took place in a garden, behind a potting shed. The third character was Little Weed, of indeterminate species, somewhat resembling a sunflower or dandelion with a smiling face, growing between two large flowerpots. The three were also sometimes visited by a tortoise called Slowcoach, and in one particular episode, the trio meet a slightly mysterious character made out of potatoes called Dan the potato man. While the "man who worked in the garden" was away having his dinner the two Flower Pot Men, Bill and Ben, emerged from the two flowerpots. After a minor adventure a minor mishap occurs; someone is guilty. "Which of those two flower pot men, was it Bill or was it Ben?" the narrator trills, in a quavering soprano; the villain confesses; the gardener's footsteps are heard coming up the garden path; the Flower Pot Men vanish into their pots and the closing credits roll. The final punch-line was, "and I think the little house knew something about it! Don't you?"

The Flower Pot Men spoke their own, highly inflected version of English, called Oddle Poddle, which was invented by Peter Hawkins (who also voiced the Daleks and Captain Pugwash). An icicle was an "ickle-kickle", and Ben would say "flobabdob". At the end of each adventure, they would say bye-bye to each other and to the Little Weed – "Babap ickle Weed" – to which the Weed would inevitably reply with tremulous cadence "Weeeeeeeeeeed". This language, like that of the Teletubbies in the 1990s, was criticised for hindering children from learning proper English.

2001 reboot
On 4 January 2001, a reboot named Bill and Ben began on CBBC on BBC Two, this time involving stop-motion animation, 35mm film style and full colour, and made by Cosgrove Hall Films with a team of ten animators. This reboot features the voices of John Thomson (who also serves as the narrator), Jimmy Hibbert and Eve Karpf. The series aired in Ireland on RTEjr and formerly aired on CBeebies in 2002-2008.

Many additions were implemented:
* A mean female rosebush with two talking buds in the neighbour's garden named Rose.
* A mischievous female prickly plant named Thistle.
* A female magpie named Pry, obsessed by shiny treasures, often just bottle caps.
* A male hedgehog named Boo.
* Slowcoach remains in the series, with few changes to his characteristics. He gets angry at Bill & Ben for ruining his things.
* A male frog named Tad.
* A female squirrel named Scamper.
* A male baby squirrel named Scuff. He is Scamper's baby nephew.
* A female spider named Whimsy.
* A male worm named Whoops.
* A male talking tomato named Ketchup.
* A male turtle named Tortuga.
* Another male tortoise called Lightning. He is Slowcoach's brother.
* Weed is no longer a weed, but an enormous sunflower. Rather than just saying "Weed!", she speaks normal English, playing an "earth mother" role to Bill and Ben and often assisting them. However, she does mutter that word in her sleep sometimes.

Comics
The show was the basis for a comic strip of the same name in the children's magazine Robin.
